The fight is one sport like no other. Opponents of equal weight face one-on-one, without teammates or times. The fighters fight each other in a close physical combat for several intense minutes, then shake hands like gentlemen and leave the mat. Success in the struggle comes when an athlete subject (holds the opponent with the shoulder blades on the mat) or scored more than the other. The fighters scored knocking down an opponent, turning his back to the mat and escaping from it. Success in the struggle can come from the mastery of surprisingly few moves.

According to the website of the Tecnologico de Georgia, as of 2010, there were more than 230,000 participants in wrestling in high school and more than 9,000 teams of high school in the United States. However, the number of College Wrestling teams fell quickly after the 1970s. Since wrestling teams are very popular, the National Association of Wrestling Association (NCWA) established University teams for these high school graduates to participate at the University level. Numerous universities in Georgia participate in the NCWA program.
