MMSD serves over 27,000 students in 49 schools, 32 of which are primary schools (kindergarten to grade 5), 12 are secondary (6 to 8 degrees), 4 schools are comprehensive education high schools and an alternative high school. The district also has early childhood programs and alternative programs for secondary level (6 ° to 12 °).

The district covers about 65 square miles including all or sections of the cities of Madison and Fitchburg, the villages of Maple Bluff and Shorewood Hills, and the towns of Blooming Grove, Burke and Madison.
